Lunch With Friends

Had lunch with old and dear friends yesterday. We talked the news (my ears are still feeling the heat of that discussion), our lives (each of us are caregiving for parents), and even sports.

Just to demonstrate that I have diversity in my life, neither of them are "dog people." Sigh. My form of affirmative action, I suppose!

Finding Peace

At least once a day I find Sage hiding out. She'll find a little space somewhere, out of the way of her rambunctious sister, where she can just sit, watch the world. I feel so protected by Sage, as if really, she is watching over me. It brings me a sense of peace, as hopefully it does for her, also.

Desperadoes

Sometimes I think these two are desperadoes. When they get bored, they convene a desperadoes meeting to figure out what the heck they can do that will grab my attention. Often, the result is not good! Amazingly, it's Sage who leads Annie into trouble, then backs away, of course, as if she didn't do anything!

What? Me?

Running Like Crazy

So part of the weekend routine is a trail run. It's easy on Sage's legs and Annie, well, you can only imagine. If we do 4 miles, Annie does 8. Up and back, up and back. Ah to be so young!

Weekend Routines

Settling into weekend routines: checking on Grandpaw, long runs on trails, big breakfasts, quiet afternoons, housecleaning...

Not as much fun as playing in the snow, but we still find places for Annie to run like a crazy little girl!

Training Day

I keep saying that Annie has been the hardest dog I have ever been owned by, to train.

Ya' think?

Snowball Fights

Sometimes when the world seems haywire, there is nothing more therapeutic than a snowball fight.

No harm, no foul.

Global Climate Change

I only hope that global climate change does not mean no snow during Annie's lifetime. She simply loves it way too much.

I Have a Dream

Ok, so this post is a little late, but I listened to Martin Luther King's famous speech yesterday. It never fails to move me to tears. Such an amazing man, what foresight, what ability to link together so many ideas, and what insight into his own life. One of my favorite quotes is something to the effect that it isn't the barbs of enemies that hurts but rather the silence of friends.

So here I have two dogs who I worried whether they would be able to get along. For the past twelve months people always ask me: "how did Sage do with Annie."

It's the thing that Martin Luther King knew. Leave people (and dogs) alone, let them get to know each other, and most certainly, they will learn to get along.

So Soulful

I took a lot of pictures of Sage this weekend and in looking at them after the download, I realized just how soulful she is. Her deep brown eyes and little furrowed brow. I have a deep thinker on my hands! A philosopher! She is her name. A Sage!

And I can not think of anything better.

Sage

Well, it's been a year and a half since Sage's surgery. And she is doing so well! She's lost some weight. She is running twice a week (on trails), and during her afternoon walks, she initiates lots of chases with Annie.

She seems good.

Waitin' for the Explosion

There is nothing Annie does that isn't filled with energy. She explodes out of the car, onto the bed, and when trying to play with Sage. If I could hook her up to a transmission line, the US would be energy independent!

Snow Dreamin'

We're having relatively warm weather here in the Northwest. But now that Annie knows what snow is all about she is dreaming about it.

She can not wait for some more time in it. Me too!

Happy Birthday Megan!

Just 'cuz you're getting older doesn't mean you have to hide under the covers!

Happy Birthday!

At Home

We're tied to home base these days, not jaunts to eastern Washington. The girls get out for some trail runs on weekend mornings, but they spend a lot of time twiddling their paws at home, wondering about the next adventure.

After the Presents

After the presents, I took the girls for a walk. Or in Annie's case, a mad dash! She didn't have to be good for Santa-paws anymore!

Annie's Resolutions

And here are Annie's:

  • Stay far away from Sage as top dog
  • Beg for treats early and often
  • Learn to fake sleeping in so don't have to run with Mommie in the morning
  • Play more, go to "training" less
  • Help Mommie care for grandpaw (although she doesn't allow me near him because she is afraid I'll leap on him...)
  • Mini-me Sage on the begging for scraps and treats thing
  • Find snow
  • Find those damn rabbits
  • Chase cats (sorry Maggie)
  • Chase deer
  • Hopefully learn to not chase a cougar or coyote
  • Beg for more treats
  • Teach Mommie about the real estate issues on the bed (I need more space)

Sage's Resolutions

Sage and Annie decided to share their New Year's Resolutions. So, of course, Sage goes first:

  • Make sure Annie understands who is top dog
  • Continue healing left knee and not damaging right one
  • Protect my car
  • Protect my home
  • Protect my food bowl (see making sure Annie knows who is top dog)
  • Love
  • Beg for more treats
  • Make sure Annie understands who is top dog.
  • Help Mommie care for grandpaw
  • Beg for more treats
  • Try to understand why Mommie doesn't eat very much hamburger
  • Show Mommie the driveway to McDonald's (they make great cheeseburgers!)
  • Beg for more treats
  • Clear the alley of cats (sorry Maggie)
  • Remind Annie who is top dog

Time Off

Quiet. We slept in. Ate. Ran. Worked. And, of course, opened stockings filled with dog treats and toys.

Sage thinks this time off thing should become a regular thing!

Happy New Year!

It's been a tough year or so. And while we were in bed by the time the clock hit midnight, we could hear celebrations all over the neighborhood (and to the neighbor whose idea it was to bang pots and pans...?!?).

Happy New Year! Sage's wish is that 2010 is the year Annie learns how to behave!
